Short Bio

Edin Mustafic was born on August 25th, 1975 in Salzburg, Austria. In 2020 he moved to Klagenfurt am Wörthersee. Before that, he lived in seclusion somewhere in the Innviertel for 15 years, where he isolated himself from the “world”. Since 2015 he has appeared for the first time as an “autodidact” in the field of art with exhibitions in Berlin and Vienna. He mainly deals with art photography and since 2018 also with object (everyday) art. At the end of 2017, after years of preparation, he started the art project: offspace | gallery panoptikum. started, which he has been taking care of on a voluntary basis with his wife Patricia.

After his first steps as an artist in Berlin and Vienna (Galerie, MAF, photo::vienna) and exhibitions in his own gallery panoptikum., He made the leap to international art fairs for the first time in 2019. In 2019 he took part in the Contemporary Art Fair JUSTMAD (X Edition) and in 2020 in the ART MADRID 2020 (solo exhibition) in Spain.

Artist Statement

“I am interested in similarities and patterns, attitudes, situations, ideas and things that connect or separate us all. It is not the loud, screaming situations in the world that I photograph, but rather I try to To visualize quiet and lonely moments in our time that exist detached from space and time – or not ?! I prefer to work in the studio & closed rooms, where I extract my motifs from their usual physical, social and culturally shaped context to help them to experience in a state of isolation. Basically, I am trying to find a common denominator in our world – the unifying ‘something’ that is the same to all of us. “

“I experiment with image design criteria, viewing habits and symbols. I would like to try to stimulate my viewers to think so that they can critically illuminate, question and experience your world anew over and over again. My work is mainly characterized by black and white photographs.”

“Question: What is art? Art was, is and will always be a failure of the system! It is the freedom to fail.”

Recognize yourself.
According to an old Japanese legend, a combative samurai once asked a Zen priest to explain heaven and hell to him. But the priest replied contemptuously: ‘You are nothing but a brat, I do not waste my time with your kind!’ Struck in his honor, the samurai was furious, drew his sword from its scabbard and shouted: ‘You shall die to me for your insolence!’ ‘That is’, the priest replied calmly, ‘hell’. Amazed by the realization of the truth of what the priest had said about anger that had taken hold of him, the samurai calmed down, sheathed his sword, and bowed to thank the priest for the insight. ‘And that,’ said the priest, ‘is heaven.’

The samurai’s sudden insight into his own state of arousal makes the decisive difference clear whether one is caught up in his feelings or whether one realizes that one is being carried away by it. Socrates’ exhortation ‘know yourself’ addresses this cornerstone of emotional intelligence, to become aware of one’s feelings as they arise.

An attempt to stimulate the viewer’s imagination. In his essay Between Imitation and Simulation – The Blurred Image from 2006, Bernd Hüppauf devotes himself to the phenomenon of the blurred image and its reception. According to Hüppauf, blurring is ‘a visual simulation that violates the rules of imitation and documentation’. The blurring removes the uniqueness of the image (see Hüppauf).

The dispute over the meaning of the detail and the sharpness that grew out of this controversy is not only based on a pure media debate, but also has its origin in the epistemological question of whether the truth is in the objectively measurable (sharpness) or in the essence of the thing (the Fuzziness) can be found. Where the blurring affects not only parts of the image but the entire photo, it is primarily about the transfer of a feeling or impression. The object is replaced by its representation or symbol. The image becomes a symbol and photography is elevated to a universal language due to the basic visual constitution of the world (cf. Stiegler).

Pieter Pauwel Rubens. 1577 – 1640. Rubens’ works are characterized by light and color. His joy in the sensual appearance forms a sharp contrast to the remote piety of the old school. Rubens endeavors were aimed at the liveliness of the representation and the coloristic effect. I selected and cut out certain motifs, which I then embedded in my own colored background. This preserves the vibrancy and variety of colors, and at the same time I have removed the typical Rubens mythology and religion from the pictures. The subjects are no longer part of the original depiction and develop a completely independent dynamic in this artificially created space.

The smoke leaves behind the most beautiful shapes and spirals in its development (creation), which are very exciting to look at. No two pictures are the same. If you take a closer look, chaos is transformed into recurring patterns that follow a certain order. The resulting shapes and spirals allow the viewer to see things that do not exist. Our brain is trimmed to always “see” or “discover” images that do not exist, even in random textures.
